Alain and Christelle's Moroccan Adventure: Embracing Retirement on the Agadir Coast

Retirement Redefined: A Journey to Morocco

For Alain and Christelle, a couple from Aveyron, France, retirement is not about sitting in front of a fireplace but rather about embracing life on the move. At 67, Alain, a former police officer, and 62-year-old Christelle have discovered that their golden years can be filled with excitement and exploration. With their children grown and living independently, they feared falling into a monotonous routine devoid of purpose. Their solution? A home on wheels that takes them to the stunning coast of Agadir, Morocco, where they spend three months each winter enjoying the beauty of the ocean and the warmth of the sun.

Preparing for their seasonal getaway involves careful financial planning. With a modest monthly income of €2,500, primarily from Alain's pension, they make sacrifices in France to ensure they can afford their Moroccan retreat. Christelle, having been a stay-at-home mom, does not receive her own pension, making their budgeting even more crucial. "We rarely go out, and dining at restaurants or going to the cinema is a luxury we can't afford," Christelle shared, emphasizing the importance of saving.

The couple meticulously organizes their budget around their priority: enjoying life in Morocco. They use their savings from the months spent in Aveyron to fund their time by the Atlantic. Once they arrive in Agadir, they set up camp for €11 a day, electricity included, enjoying breathtaking views of the ocean from their camper. This simple yet fulfilling lifestyle allows them to reconnect with nature and experience the rich culture of Morocco.

Living Simply and Joyfully

Shopping at the local souk in Aourir has become one of their cherished weekly routines, a tradition they have maintained for a decade. Here, they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, with a kilo of vegetables costing around €1.30, allowing them to create delightful homemade juices with fresh oranges. These small pleasures enhance their daily lives in Morocco, enabling them to stretch their budget while enjoying a better quality of life.

Alain and Christelle appreciate the slower pace of life that Morocco offers. After years of adhering to strict schedules as a police officer, Alain has embraced a more relaxed lifestyle, often forgoing his watch. "We rise with the sun and retire with it," he states, capturing the essence of their tranquil existence. Their days are filled with the simple joys of sipping mint tea while watching the sunset, savoring fresh fish, and relishing the peaceful ambiance of the ocean.

Affectionately calling themselves the "young old," the couple is determined to make the most of this vibrant chapter in their lives while maintaining their independence. Their camper van not only serves as a home but also as a ticket to adventure, allowing them to travel and enjoy the coastal environment for months on end. Once their winter sojourn concludes, they return to Aveyron, where they resume their routines to save for their next Moroccan escape.

For Alain, the contrast between their life in France and Morocco is palpable. He describes the pervasive gloom he feels in France, which starkly contrasts with the joy of living at their own pace in Morocco, where they can enjoy market visits, leisurely meals, and tranquil moments by the sea.
