Marrakech High-Speed Train Project Reaches 41% Completion with First Train Expected in September 2027

Significant Progress in Marrakech High-Speed Train Project

The ambitious high-speed train project aimed at connecting Kenitra to Marrakech has reached a notable milestone, achieving a completion rate of 41%. This advancement was recently disclosed by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel Samad Guij, during a presentation of his ministry's budget to the parliament. The project's overall length extends to 430 kilometers, with an estimated budget of around 53 billion dirhams. The completion percentage has increased from approximately 30% reported in May to 41% in November, marking an impressive rise of 11 percentage points in just five months.

This progress not only reflects the ongoing construction efforts but also outlines a timeline for the delivery of the trains and the completion of the necessary infrastructure and technical installations. These intertwined phases are crucial for the operational readiness of the rail line, which will ultimately transition into commercial service. One of the key dates highlighted by the minister is the scheduled delivery of the first high-speed train intended for this line in September 2027. This milestone signifies a critical phase in the project’s development, with civil engineering works expected to conclude by October 2027, while signaling systems will continue until December 2028. The total completion of the line is anticipated by September 2029, according to various reliable sources.

Fleet Expansion and Future Connectivity

In terms of fleet expansion, the National Office of Railways has placed an order for 18 high-speed trains from the French company Alstom, as part of a broader initiative to acquire a total of 168 new trains aimed at modernizing and expanding Morocco's rail offerings. The design phase for these 18 trains is currently at 78% completion, with the first train expected to arrive in September 2027, followed by subsequent deliveries until June 2030, marking the completion of the entire fleet.

The new trains will feature the Avelia Horizon model, which includes double-decker carriages, and the contract with Alstom was signed in March 2025 for a total value of 781 million euros. The extension of the high-speed rail line to Marrakech is anticipated to revolutionize rail connectivity between the vibrant city and key regions in northern and central Morocco. This development is expected to significantly reduce travel times between Marrakech, Casablanca, and Rabat, while also enhancing connectivity to major airports and economic hubs.

The project's significance goes beyond merely shortening travel durations; it is poised to bolster Marrakech's appeal as a destination for investment and tourism, facilitating the movement of travelers, especially with the upcoming preparations related to hosting the World Cup in 2030.
