Morocco's Energy Production Experience Significant Growth
Morocco has witnessed a remarkable surge in its natural gas production, with an impressive increase of 25% in the first half of 2026. This growth is largely attributed to the operationalization of two new wells located in the Gharb and Essaouira regions, as reported by the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM). The production levels in Gharb soared by 40%, while Essaouira experienced a notable rise of 23%, following the commissioning of the SAH-1 and MKL-110 wells. Furthermore, the production of condensate, a byproduct of natural gas production, more than doubled, showcasing a staggering increase of 103%.
The demand for natural gas among industrial clients has also seen a significant uptick, with deliveries to industrial customers in Kenitra climbing by 67%. Additionally, supplies to the phosphate producer OCP in Youssoufia rose by 24%, further underscoring Morocco's growing role as a key player in the energy sector. ONHYM's total share of gas deliveries reached an impressive 13.03 million standard cubic meters, marking a 26% increase. Moreover, Morocco has also imported approximately 338.46 million cubic meters of gas through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline during this six-month period, reflecting the country’s strategic efforts to bolster its energy resources.
Exploration Efforts Unveil New Oil Prospects
In a separate development, ONHYM's 2025 exploration report has identified eight promising oil prospects within Morocco. This groundbreaking discovery includes five potential sites in the Tadla basin and three in the Missour region. The findings are based on comprehensive seismic surveys and geological assessments, which highlight Morocco's untapped potential in both natural gas and oil production. These explorations are likely to pave the way for future investments and advancements in the country's energy sector, further strengthening its economy and reducing reliance on imported energy sources.
