Morocco's House of Councillors President Urges Return of Sahrawi Refugees from Tindouf Camps

Urgent Call for Refugees' Return

RABAT — In a fervent address on Monday, Mohamed Ould Errachid, the President of Morocco's House of Councillors, made an urgent appeal for the return of Sahrawi refugees currently residing in the Tindouf camps. He expressed a deep concern that "another generation must not grow up under tents," shedding light on the pressing humanitarian issue faced by these individuals. This statement was made during a joint plenary session aimed at assessing the latest developments regarding the Moroccan Sahara, where Ould Errachid applauded the diplomatic strides made under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He emphasized the necessity for increased parliamentary mobilization on both bilateral and multilateral fronts to address this critical national cause.

Ould Errachid underscored that Morocco is at a "delicate and decisive juncture in the history of our foremost national cause." He pointed out that the ongoing negotiations on the international stage signify much more than mere diplomatic efforts; they encapsulate the essence of a national cause, the collective memory of the Moroccan people, the sacrifices made by generations, and the unwavering determination of a nation that will not compromise on its territorial integrity.

Strengthening Morocco's Position

In his remarks, Ould Errachid welcomed a recent communiqué from the Royal Cabinet, characterizing it as a pivotal marker in a strategic transition. He highlighted the shift from a mindset focused on conflict management to one aimed at a profound transformation of the parameters that have long influenced the trajectory of Morocco's national cause. This strategic pivot is crucial for revitalizing efforts concerning the Sahrawi issue.

The parliamentary leader also brought attention to the growing international consensus supporting Morocco's autonomy proposal, noting that the European Union has shown unified backing over the past year, alongside endorsements from various capitals worldwide. This shift in diplomatic dynamics was further evidenced during recent discussions at the UN Security Council, where 11 member states voted in favor of a draft resolution aimed at reviewing MINURSO's mandate and designating the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole basis for negotiations leading toward a definitive resolution. Although the resolution did not reach final adoption, Ould Errachid considered the vote as a significant political milestone, interpreting it as a clear recognition of the "realism and credibility" of Morocco's position. He urged opposing parties to abandon delay tactics and reconsider their stances that have perpetuated the stalemate.

To advance Morocco's sovereign position, Ould Errachid proposed a three-point parliamentary strategy rooted in historic allegiances linking Sahrawi tribes to the Alaouite Sultans and Kings, coupled with strong democratic participation. He referenced the September 23 legislative elections, highlighting that the Southern Provinces garnered the highest voter turnout in the country, reinforcing the legitimacy of Morocco's claims and the strength of its democratic framework.
