Moroccan Ahmed Chihi Remains Hospitalized After Tragic Racist Attack in Trappes, France

Ahmed Chihi's Ongoing Battle for Recovery

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked many, Ahmed Chihi, a 21-year-old man of Moroccan origin, is currently hospitalized in critical condition following a brutal shooting attack that occurred on October 23 in Trappes, a suburb southwest of Paris. The attack, characterized by its racist motives, resulted in the tragic death of one individual and left seven others injured. Reports indicate that Ahmed was simply visiting an Esso petrol station to purchase a few items when the unthinkable happened; he was ambushed by a gunman who opened fire indiscriminately, hitting him multiple times and causing significant damage to vital organs.

According to his cousin, Mohcine Chihi, Ahmed had arrived at the petrol station on his electric scooter when the assailant unleashed a barrage of gunfire. Disturbing footage from the scene depicts Ahmed desperately trying to take cover inside the station's shop before collapsing from his injuries. Following the attack, he was rushed to Percy Hospital in Clamart, where his initial condition was deemed serious. While there have been some positive signs of improvement, the family remains deeply concerned for his health, as official statements regarding his operations and recovery progress have not been publicly disclosed. Reports circulating on social media suggest that Ahmed has regained consciousness and briefly communicated with family members, yet these claims remain unverified.

In an admirable show of solidarity, Mohcine launched a verified fundraising campaign on CotizUp on October 26, aiming to support Ahmed's medical recovery. To date, the initiative has garnered an impressive sum of over €86,000 from more than 7,600 generous donors, reflecting the community's commitment to helping Ahmed in his time of need.

Investigation into the Attack's Racist Motives

The shooting incident extended across Trappes and the neighboring area of La Verrière, with prosecutors revealing that the assailant fired a staggering 128 rounds across eight different locations during a harrowing journey that spanned approximately 12 kilometers. The sole fatality from this attack was identified as Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old French national of Congolese descent, who was known for his practice of mixed martial arts. Among the other victims, an 11-year-old girl, two cleaning workers, and a woman were also shot near the petrol station, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack. As of October 29, three victims remained hospitalized, with one reported to be in life-threatening condition.

The perpetrator, 39-year-old Kevin T., has been taken into custody and is currently under investigation for charges of terrorist murder and attempted murder with a racist aggravating factor. During his interrogation, he reportedly admitted to targeting individuals he perceived to be Muslim, African, or North African. Investigators have linked his choice of location to his belief that Trappes was a hub for Islamist activity, although he has denied any racist or terrorist intentions. Upon searching his residence, authorities discovered a copy of Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf,” nationalist stickers associated with the National Rally party, and equipment related to weaponry, including gas cylinders thought to be linked to a potential booby trap. However, these findings do not confirm any official connection to the political party.

In response to the tragic events, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the area to pay his respects. Following the attack, a significant memorial gathering took place in Trappes on October 30, with estimates suggesting that around 12,000 individuals came together to honor the victims. The French government has also announced plans for a national tribute to recognize the gravity of the incident and its impact on the community.
