Régis and Annie: French Retirees Enjoy Six Months of Sunshine Near Agadir, Morocco for Just €13 a Day

Retirement Bliss in Morocco: A Journey to Affordable Living

Régis and Annie, a retired couple from Burgundy, have made the life-changing decision to escape the winter gloom of France for the sunny shores of Agadir, Morocco. With a combined pension of approximately €2,500 each month, they have found a remarkably affordable way to enjoy their golden years without the burdens of high living costs. Their chosen camping site, situated about thirty kilometers north of Agadir, offers them the perfect blend of comfort and savings, allowing them to revel in the warm Moroccan sun for six months at a time.

In a recent feature on the YouTube channel _AILLEURS_, Régis expressed his delight about this seasonal escape, saying, "Here I am in a t-shirt, shorts, and sandals." The couple cherishes the opportunity to bask in the pleasant climate while keeping expenses in check, as their campsite costs them just €13 per day. This price includes essential amenities that help them maintain a significant portion of their budget, making their Moroccan retreat not just a dream but an achievable reality.

Comfort and Convenience at a Great Price

Régis and Annie have settled into a well-equipped camping facility that boasts around 800 plots, attracting numerous European retirees seeking to dodge the harsh winter months. During peak times, especially around Christmas, these spots become highly sought after, yet the couple has found a tranquil corner at plot 254 on Agadir Street. They appreciate the serenity of their location, along with access to water, electricity, and sewage disposal—all for the modest price of €13 daily. Over a month, this totals approximately €390, leading to a six-month cost of €2,340, which is significantly lower than similar accommodations in France.

However, reaching their sunny haven is no small feat. The couple embarks on a five-day road trip followed by a 36-hour ferry ride from their home in Burgundy. To ensure their property is maintained during their extended absence, they rely on neighbors and family to check in regularly, a crucial arrangement when planning such lengthy getaways.

They often travel alongside friends René and Paulette, retired Parisians aged 80 and 79, who have made this journey to Morocco for the past eight years. Despite the long distance, René remains unfazed, sharing that he has always been accustomed to traveling such lengths, though he admits it can be tiring by the end of the day.

While the €13 per day fee only covers their campsite, Régis and Annie must factor in other expenses like food, transportation, maintenance of their camper, insurance, and travel costs. They have found that many services, such as camper washing for about 90 dirhams (around €8), are more affordable than in France, adding to their overall savings.

The couple’s successful experiences in Morocco have encouraged them to extend their stays, initially planning only four weeks but ultimately staying four months with minimal rain. They now aim for a full six-month stay in the Agadir region. Reports suggest that approximately 30,000 French retirees make this journey to Morocco each year, drawn by the promise of a more enjoyable daily life marked by affordable living, pleasant weather, and the chance to truly relish retirement.
