Morocco's Interior Ministry Reports Over 58,000 Illegal Migration Attempts in 2026

Significant Efforts Against Illegal Migration in Morocco

On November 2, 2026, the Moroccan Interior Ministry unveiled a comprehensive report detailing the ongoing battle against illegal migration within the country. Since the beginning of the year, authorities have successfully thwarted a staggering 58,153 illegal migration attempts, coupled with the dismantling of 148 networks engaged in the smuggling of migrants. This extensive effort highlights Morocco's strategic geographical position as both a transit and destination country for migrants, particularly those from sub-Saharan Africa.

The report indicates that, as of the end of August 2026, Moroccan authorities have also rescued 8,288 migrants, providing them with essential assistance during their perilous journeys. This intervention underscores the proactive measures being taken to address the humanitarian aspects of migration, alongside law enforcement efforts to combat human trafficking.

In comparison, the previous year, 2025, saw authorities thwart approximately 73,740 illegal migration attempts and dismantle 300 smuggling networks, indicating a persistent and escalating challenge. The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that the current figures reflect the considerable pressures of migration that Morocco faces, given its strategic location and the continuous flow of migrants seeking better opportunities.

Moreover, the report highlighted that 4,185 migrants benefited from voluntary return programs to their home countries in 2026, with 2,140 of those individuals coordinated through the International Organization for Migration. This initiative illustrates Morocco’s commitment to addressing migration issues through a dual approach that combines the fight against smuggling networks with the safeguarding of migrants' rights, in collaboration with international organizations and European and African partners.

As the situation evolves, the Ministry warned that smuggling networks are increasingly adapting their recruitment and organizational strategies, leveraging digital platforms to enhance their operations. The ongoing economic and security crises in several African countries contribute to the relentless attempts at illegal migration from North and West Africa to Europe, further complicating the landscape for Moroccan authorities tasked with border management and migrant protection.
