UM6P Shines in Arab University Rankings

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), located in the vibrant city of Benguerir, proudly stands as the highest-ranked Moroccan institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) Arab University Rankings 2027, securing an impressive 13th position in the region. This noteworthy accomplishment was announced during the THE Arab Universities Summit 2026, an event hosted by UM6P on its campus from November 3 to 5, which has gathered over 250 senior officials and more than 60 experts from across the Arab world.

The summit, organized in collaboration with Times Higher Education, revolves around the theme “Collaboration and Progress: Promoting Excellence in Arab Higher Education.” It features a comprehensive program designed to address critical areas such as global challenges, reputation and performance, transformation and innovation, as well as learning outcomes. Such initiatives underscore Morocco's commitment to fostering a progressive educational environment.

Significant Advances for Moroccan Universities

This year’s rankings highlight a significant advancement for Morocco, which now boasts five universities in the top 100, an increase from the previous ranking cycle. Alongside UM6P, which achieved an overall score of 52.7, other notable Moroccan institutions include Ibn Tofaïl University at 66th, International University of Rabat (UIR) at 72nd, Mohammed V University of Rabat at joint 85th, and Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University at joint 96th. This surge illustrates the growing prominence of Moroccan universities on the regional and global stage.

UM6P not only leads the national rankings but also provides a platform for dialogue on higher education in the region, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping the future of academic excellence. The summit also features the THE Awards Arab World 2026, which celebrate outstanding initiatives and achievements across the Arab educational landscape.

In the broader context of the Arab region, Saudi Arabia continues to dominate the rankings, with its King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) maintaining the top spot for the fourth consecutive year. The 2027 rankings encompass a record 269 universities from 17 countries and territories, reflecting the dynamic evolution of higher education in the Arab world.

According to Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, the rankings indicate a significant shift towards a more diversified educational ecosystem, fueled by strong investments in research and strategic governmental support. This development is vital as it positions the region as a burgeoning hub for research and innovation, suggesting a bright future for educational institutions across the Arab world.
