Averroes Honored Through Poetry in Marrakech
Marrakech is set to pay tribute to the renowned philosopher Ibn Rushd, widely known as Averroes in Europe, through a literary gathering organized by the Cervantes Institute. This unique event will take place on November 10, 2026, at 6:00 PM in the Ben Youssef Media Library's conference room, located in Dar Attakafa. The gathering will be conducted in Spanish, with summaries provided in Arabic, making it accessible to a diverse audience.
The highlight of the event will be the international anthology titled Averroes, the Light of Reason, which features the poetic voices of 120 poets hailing from 14 different countries. This collection aims to establish a cultural bridge between Córdoba, the philosopher's birthplace, and Marrakech, where he passed away in 1198. Through the prism of poetry, the anthology advocates for Ibn Rushd’s legacy, emphasizing his commitment to reason, knowledge, and intercultural dialogue.
Among the participants in this significant gathering will be notable figures such as Manuel Gahete, José Sarria, Mohamed Bilal Achmal, and Salma Moutaouakkil, alongside esteemed poets including María Ángeles Pérez, Francisco Morales Lomas, Rafael Soler, Malika El Assimi, and Fatima Lahssini. Their contributions will enrich the event, showcasing a blend of diverse literary traditions and perspectives.
Ibn Rushd, a prominent intellectual figure from Al-Andalus, was not only a philosopher but also a physician and jurist. His profound commentaries on Aristotle's works played a pivotal role in shaping both Islamic thought and medieval European philosophy. The event aims to revive this shared intellectual heritage and position poetry as a vital space for dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
Admission to the gathering is free, allowing all interested individuals to immerse themselves in this celebration of poetry and philosophy, as long as capacity permits.
