Morocco Showcases 'Tini Kasbah' Project at the International 'Denkmal 2026' Exhibition in Leipzig

Morocco's 'Tini Kasbah' Shines at Denkmal 2026 in Leipzig

During the prestigious Denkmal 2026 exhibition held in Leipzig, Germany, from November 5 to 7, Morocco showcased its innovative 'Tini Kasbah' project, which features a miniature architectural model that exemplifies the potential of traditional earthen construction techniques applied in contemporary designs that are disassemblable and reconfigurable. This exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for Morocco to introduce its rich architectural heritage, emphasizing the traditional building practices utilizing earthen materials. The model is inspired by the historical kasbahs of Morocco, integrating contemporary technological solutions into its design and functionality.

Innovative Architecture Blending Tradition and Technology

The Moroccan project presents a modular architectural system comprised of units that can be disassembled, reassembled, and relocated, drawing inspiration from the earthen architecture of the Almohad kasbahs. This initiative aims to merge the traditional characteristics of earthen construction with the requirements of modern design. Zohair Benani, one of the initiative's supervisors and Deputy Secretary General of the Moroccan branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Morocco), explained that the exhibited model represents a construction system for which a patent application has been submitted to the Moroccan Industrial and Commercial Property Office.

Furthermore, the initiative seeks to promote Moroccan expertise in earthen construction and enhance it by integrating modern techniques that broaden the scope of applications while maintaining ties to local architectural heritage. Among the project’s distinguishing features is the incorporation of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, reflecting the team’s commitment to developing solutions that blend traditional materials with technological innovation.

Morocco's presence at the Leipzig exhibition extended beyond the architectural model; it included a scientific program focused on exchanging knowledge regarding earthen engineering and methods for preserving historical buildings. On the final day of the event, two presentations were organized by the National School of Architecture in Marrakech. The first addressed the social and historical dimensions of earthen architecture in Morocco, while the second focused on the use of earthen mortar in the restoration of ancient buildings. This participation highlights the significance of Moroccan expertise in natural material construction, especially amid growing interest in architectural solutions that rely on traditional techniques, while also responding to the demands for development and renewal.

Looking ahead, the team behind the 'Tini Kasbah' project aims to expand collaboration with industrial players and specialized institutions in Germany, given the country’s expertise in manufacturing products based on clay. The team comprises architects and professors specialized in architecture, aspiring to evolve the project into a scalable experience through technical and industrial partnerships that will help enhance its potential. This participation continues from Morocco's involvement in the 2024 edition of the Denkmal exhibition, where a full-sized kasbah received a gold medal, further strengthening the presence of Moroccan architectural heritage in this international event. Through 'Tini Kasbah,' Morocco seeks to demonstrate the capacity of earthen architecture to embrace innovation while transforming the architectural legacy of kasbahs into a source of new ideas and solutions that bridge tradition and modern technology.
