Egypt Football: Hossam Hassan Dismissed, Ali Maher Takes Charge Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers

Hossam Hassan Leaves Egypt National Team, Ali Maher Appointed New Head Coach

In a significant shake-up within the Egyptian national football scene, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) officially confirmed on November 7, 2026, that head coach Hossam Hassan has been relieved of his duties along with his entire coaching staff. Taking the helm is Ali Maher, the current manager of Ceramica Cleopatra, who is expected to lead the team through an important period leading up to the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The decision to part ways with Hassan came after a thorough review by the EFA Board, which highlighted the negative impact of recent events on the national team’s reputation and stability. The EFA expressed gratitude for Hassan’s contributions during his tenure, wishing him success in future endeavors. Ali Maher is now tasked with outlining his vision for the team's new technical staff as he takes over the senior national team.

Hossam Hassan, who is celebrated as a former star and Egypt's all-time top scorer, had been in charge since February 2024. Under his leadership, the team achieved a commendable fourth-place finish in the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations and reached the round of 16 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup held last summer.

As the Egyptian national team gears up to face Malawi in two crucial matches on November 13 and 17, they currently lead Group B with four points, following a victory against South Sudan and a draw with Angola in the opening rounds of the qualifiers for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
