Unstable Weather Conditions in Morocco
This week, Morocco is expected to experience notable weather fluctuations as unstable cloud formations develop, bringing with them thunderstorms and varying rainfall, particularly in the interior regions of the southern provinces and several areas in the central and southern parts of the country. Starting from Tuesday and continuing into Wednesday, these rain showers are predicted to expand, covering a broad expanse of the northern, central, and eastern regions of Morocco, coinciding with a significant drop in temperatures.
Hussein Youabed, the communications officer at the General Directorate of Meteorology, explained that these weather disturbances are due to the intrusion of relatively cold air in the mid to upper layers of the atmosphere, while warmer air masses continue to dominate the lower layers, especially over the Atlas Mountains and in the southern and southeastern regions. This vertical thermal variation enhances atmospheric instability, aiding the development of thunderstorm clouds. Youabed noted that local thunderstorms are expected at the beginning of the week in certain areas, before the rainfall expands to cover other regions of the kingdom.
On Monday, the weather will be marked by the formation of unstable clouds accompanied by local thunderstorms over the interior areas of the southern provinces. Dense clouds are anticipated over the Souss region, the Atlas Mountains, and their eastern slopes, along with the Tadla plains, Rahamna, the southern eastern region, and the Abda area, where there is a possibility of light showers or intermittent rainfall. At night, low clouds may form, potentially accompanied by fog or localized drizzle, particularly over the northern and central plains and the phosphates plateau. Maximum temperatures are forecasted to range from 31 to 35 degrees Celsius in the interior of the southern provinces, while the southern eastern slopes and Souss region, as well as the Tadla and Rahamna plains, will experience temperatures between 25 and 31 degrees, and from 11 to 18 degrees in the Atlas and Rif mountains.
Rainfall and Temperature Drops Expected
On Tuesday, significant developments in weather conditions are anticipated, with rain and thunderstorms expected to extend to the Atlas Mountains and adjacent areas, the Rif region, the eastern and western regions, as well as Souss and the southeastern areas, including the northeastern parts of the southern provinces. Some snowfall is also expected over the peaks of the High and Middle Atlas mountains, while the northern and central Atlantic plains and Mediterranean coast will witness partly cloudy to cloudy conditions intermittently with occasional rain. Moderate to relatively strong winds are expected to affect the southeastern regions.
Minimum temperatures will range from 3 to 10 degrees Celsius in the Atlas and Rif mountains, while temperatures in the southeastern and western areas, the Saïs region, and the northern and central plains will be between 15 and 20 degrees. Other regions can expect temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees, with a noticeable decrease in daytime temperatures compared to the previous day. Wednesday is expected to continue with unstable conditions, with local thunderstorms and rainfall over the Mediterranean coast, the Rif region, Saïs, Loukkos, the Tangier region, and the Middle Atlas mountains. Scattered rain is also anticipated in the northern Atlantic plains, the eastern region, and the peaks of the High and Small Atlas mountains, while the northern parts of the southern provinces and the southeastern regions will experience partly cloudy conditions.
Moderate winds will affect the central coast and the Middle Atlas mountains, with slight temperature increases expected in the southeastern and southern regions, while other areas might see slight declines or stable temperatures. Looking forward to the weather developments starting Thursday, Youabed indicated that some clouds are expected to form in the northwestern parts of the kingdom, followed by a relatively stable atmospheric condition in the subsequent days. However, this stability is not anticipated to last until the end of the forecast period, as disturbed weather is expected to return to the northern half of the kingdom as the forecast period nears its conclusion. Gradual temperature increases are anticipated from Thursday until Sunday, followed by a slight decrease in the days that follow.
