Unexpected Flight Detour from Málaga to Madrid via Casablanca Due to Train Accident

Flight Disruptions from Málaga to Madrid

On October 28, travelers attempting to fly from Málaga to Madrid faced an unexpected and lengthy detour via Casablanca, Morocco, as highlighted by Google Flights. Due to a tragic train collision near Urda, in the province of Toledo, high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalucía were severely disrupted, leading to a surge in demand for alternative air travel routes. This unfortunate incident resulted in airfares skyrocketing, with tickets reaching as high as €446 for a journey that could take nearly 29 hours.

During midday on the same day, the Spanish newspaper El Español consulted Google Flights to explore options connecting these two Spanish cities. Among the available flights was a suggestion from Royal Air Maroc, which included a layover in Casablanca. The price ranged between €433 and €446 for a one-way ticket, showcasing the impact of the situation on travel plans.

One of the longer itineraries proposed by the flight aggregator indicated a departure from Málaga at 1:25 PM, with an expected arrival in Madrid the following day at 6:05 PM. This journey would span a total of 28 hours and 40 minutes, with an astonishing 25 hours and 40 minutes spent waiting in Morocco. It is important to note that this itinerary was generated by the comparison tool rather than being based on an actual passenger's experience.

Iberia Steps In to Assist Travelers

In response to the travel chaos, Iberia, the Spanish airline, took immediate action on the same day. In an official statement, the airline announced a fare cap of €99 for economy class and €149 for business class on all flights between Madrid and Andalucía, effective until November 8. This move aims to alleviate the burden on travelers affected by the disruptions.

Additionally, Iberia is expanding its services by adding 520 seats to its flight schedule for October 28, including 362 additional seats for routes between Madrid and Málaga. The airline also plans to introduce two extra flights: one from Madrid to Málaga at 8 PM and another from Málaga to Madrid at 10 PM. These adjustments are a strategic effort to accommodate the increased demand and help travelers reach their destinations more efficiently.
