Cafe Gitane Reopens in Chinatown, New York: A Taste of Morocco in Every Bite

Cafe Gitane's Grand Return to Chinatown

In an exciting revival for food enthusiasts and cultural connoisseurs alike, Cafe Gitane has officially reopened its doors at 162 East Broadway in Chinatown, New York City. This iconic establishment, a beloved treasure of the downtown dining scene, promises to bring its renowned Moroccan-French cuisine back to life, along with a fresh cocktail program that is set to elevate the dining experience. Originally founded by Luc Lévy in 1994 on Mott Street, Cafe Gitane has garnered a loyal following over the years, attracting a host of celebrities including David Bowie, Helena Christensen, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The café's unique ambiance and delectable dishes have made it a haven for locals and visitors alike, perfect for leisurely lunches and vibrant brunches.

A Culinary Journey with New Offerings

Now situated in a cozy 1,200 square-foot space that accommodates 33 seats, including seven at the bar, Cafe Gitane retains its signature charm. The decor continues to pay homage to its history, showcasing a map of Morocco and Jimi Hendrix's watchful eye over diners. Among the returning staff are seasoned kitchen employees who have been with Lévy for over 15 years, ensuring that the quality and authenticity of the food remain intact. Guests can expect to savor the famous avocado toast, a simple yet satisfying dish featuring lemon juice, olive oil, and chili flakes on seven-grain bread. The Moroccan couscous, a dish famously favored by Bowie, is back on the menu, accompanied by an assortment of vegetables, golden raisins, pine nuts, hummus, and mint, with optional additions of chicken or merguez.

The menu also features spicy beef meatball tagine, hachis Parmentier, and a refreshing hearts of palm salad, alongside new selections such as lamb ragu linguini, skirt steak, and an $18 burger. The most notable addition to the experience is the introduction of a full liquor program, featuring creative cocktails like the "Sheltering Sky," which blends vodka, Aperol, and Moroccan spices, and the "Jardin Secret," made with mezcal, pineapple syrup, grapefruit, and lime. For those preferring a non-alcoholic option, the café continues to serve its beloved Moroccan mint tea.

Cafe Gitane operates on a walk-in basis only and remains closed on Mondays, welcoming guests for lunch and dinner from Tuesday through Sunday. With no reservations available, patrons are encouraged to embrace the vibrant atmosphere and perhaps engage in some good-natured waiting while enjoying the allure of downtown New York. In this new chapter, Cafe Gitane not only aims to revive its culinary legacy but also promises to be a bustling social hub for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
