Prince Moulay El Hassan Launches Operations at Nador West Med Container Terminal in Morocco

Inauguration of Nador West Med Container Terminal

On Saturday, the esteemed Moroccan Prince Moulay El Hassan officially launched operations at the inaugural container terminal located at Nador West Med, following directives from His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The event took place in the commune of Iaazzanene, situated within Nador Province, and represents the first phase of the operationalization of the Nador West Med industrial-port complex. This facility is not just a testament to Morocco's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure but also showcases the nation's strategic vision for economic transformation and development.

With a staggering investment of 54 billion Moroccan dinars sourced from both public and private sectors, this project reflects the King's dedicated interest in facilitating the development of critical national infrastructure. Such initiatives are deemed essential for positioning Morocco as a competitive player in the global economic landscape while promoting the emergence of new industrial, logistics, and economic growth hubs.

Key Features and Future Prospects

The newly inaugurated terminal boasts impressive specifications, including 1,520 linear meters of quay, an 18-meter draft, and a yard space spanning 70 hectares, which collectively enable it to handle an estimated capacity of 3.5 million containers by the year 2030. The 'East' terminal, constructed with an investment of approximately 5 billion dinars, has been entrusted to a consortium comprising Marsa Maroc, recognized as Africa's fourth-largest container terminal operator, and Terminal Investment Limited, a subsidiary of the leading global container shipping line MSC Group. This consortium will oversee the terminal's operations and maintenance for a period of 25 years.

In addition to the 'East' terminal, the complex will also feature a 'West' terminal with a capacity of 1.8 million TEUs, awarded to a consortium comprising Marsa Maroc and CMA CGM, the third-largest container shipping line in the world. Scheduled to commence operations in April 2027, this terminal will further elevate the port's total capacity to an impressive 5.3 million containers.

The Nador West Med complex is poised to encompass additional facilities, including a general cargo terminal capable of processing 3 million tons, a bulk cargo terminal with a capacity of 7 million tons, and a roll-on/roll-off terminal designed to accommodate 400,000 units. The timelines for these facilities are set for completion between 2026 and 2028, showcasing a robust plan for comprehensive infrastructural development.

Furthermore, the Nador West Med Industrial-Port Complex is expected to generate approximately 14,000 direct jobs and an additional 20,000 indirect jobs in the near term, particularly targeting the youth demographic. The development spans an extensive industrial and logistics hub across 700 hectares and has attracted an impressive 12 billion dinars in private investment.

Infrastructure enhancements aimed at improving access and connectivity will also link this large-scale project to the surrounding areas, including a 49-kilometer railway line connecting Selouane to Nador West Med and a 105-kilometer highway linking to the city of Guercif. This port infrastructure is envisioned as a powerful catalyst for wealth creation, job opportunities, and overall economic growth, effectively facilitating the emergence of a new hub dedicated to industrial and logistical advancements.

Aligned with directives from King Mohammed VI, training programs will be developed to cater to the needs of emerging industries, promoting the professional integration of the youth into the workforce. During the ceremony, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan took part in the first operation to unload a container from a commercial vessel at the 'East' terminal, symbolizing the commencement of this significant venture.

The Nador West Med industrial-port complex is an integral component of the Royal Strategic Vision, which aims to capitalize on Morocco's comparative advantages and secure the kingdom's share of the international maritime trade market across the Mediterranean basin, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. This initiative complements the momentum initiated by the Tanger Med project, emphasizing a strategy of complementarity that seeks to equip Morocco with a diversified and competitive port infrastructure.

Moreover, similar ambitions are unfolding along the Atlantic coast with the Dakhla Atlantique project, which aims to solidify Morocco's presence in Africa and facilitate preferred access to international markets for Sahel countries. During his visit to the Nador West Med Industrial-Port Complex, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan also honored a detachment of the Royal Guard before being welcomed by various ministers, including those of Economy, Finance, and Public Performance, Infrastructure, Water, Forests, and Industry, Trade, Investment, and Economic Inclusion.
