Morocco's Date Production Outlook for 2026-2027
In a significant announcement made on Wednesday in Erfoud, located in the Errachidia province, Khalid Hattami, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, revealed that Morocco's date production for the upcoming 2026-2027 agricultural season is anticipated to reach around 180,000 tons. This projection comes amidst the backdrop of the 15th International Date Exhibition (Sidiat 2026), where Hattami emphasized the importance of enhancing national production capabilities to meet domestic consumption needs, which range between 220,000 and 250,000 tons annually.
Minister Hattami articulated that the Sidiat event transcends a mere agricultural fair; it serves as a strategic platform aimed at fostering the development of the date sector, which is endowed with immense potential. He underscored the sector's crucial role in ensuring food security, fostering territorial development, and adding significant value to the Moroccan economy, while also highlighting its promising export potential. Furthermore, he noted the sector's ability to generate employment opportunities for the youth, contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of the nation.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty has indicated that the date palm value chain plays a pivotal role in the economic and social development of oasis regions. The sector contributes more than 3 billion dirhams in added value and provides over 3.4 million workdays annually, significantly influencing the income of families in these areas. It directly or indirectly supports the livelihoods of approximately two million Moroccans, establishing itself as a vital source of income.
In addition to its economic and social implications, the date palm sector also aids in combating rural emigration, mitigating desertification, and preserving the oasis heritage. These efforts align with Morocco's Green Plan and the Green Generation Strategy for 2020-2030, which aim to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability across the country.
