Ambitious Rail Investment Plans for Morocco
The National Railway Office of Morocco (ONCF) has set forth an ambitious investment plan amounting to approximately MAD 96 billion, which translates to around $10 billion, aimed at significantly enhancing the country’s rail transport system. This initiative is geared towards boosting annual passenger transport to about 100 million by the year 2030, while also targeting an operating margin of over 5 billion Moroccan dirhams. The strategic development plan encompasses several key projects, including the extensive expansion of the rail network to meet the growing demand for rail travel within Morocco.
A substantial portion of this investment, specifically MAD 53 billion, is earmarked for extending the high-speed rail line from Kenitra to Marrakech. Additionally, MAD 29 billion will be allocated for the acquisition of 168 new trains, and MAD 14 billion is designated for the development of regional express trains as well as the maintenance of the existing rail infrastructure. This multi-faceted approach is expected to modernize rail services significantly and improve operational efficiency across the network.
Progress on Ongoing Rail Projects
Among the ongoing projects, the completion of the 430-kilometer Kenitra-Marrakech rail line stands out, which is set to enhance connectivity between major urban centers. Further developments include significant upgrades to the rail network in the Casablanca region, the construction of the Casablanca South station, and the addition of vital stops at Mohammed V Airport and Hassan II Stadium. These enhancements are not only aimed at improving passenger experience but also focus on fostering local train manufacturing, thereby contributing to the national economy.
Looking ahead, predictions indicate that by 2026, ONCF's revenue will exceed MAD 5.27 billion, with total investments reaching MAD 18.2 billion, despite an expected net deficit of MAD 652 million. As investments are projected to surge to over MAD 29 billion in 2027, the future of rail transport in Morocco appears promising, paving the way for improved infrastructure and increased passenger capacity.
