Cheikha Trax's Legal Troubles in Marrakech
In a significant legal development in Marrakech, the well-known singer Fatima Zahra Laazizi, popularly referred to as Cheikha Trax, has been sentenced to eight months of imprisonment following a court ruling on November 4, 2026. This verdict stems from her involvement in an audio recording deemed offensive to the residents of the Sidi Youssef Ben Ali neighborhood. The ruling was issued by the Criminal Chamber of the Marrakech Court of First Instance, which also mandated her and her sister-in-law to pay 120,000 dirhams (approximately 12 million centimes) as damages to the affected parties.
The controversy began in early October when residents filed a complaint after an audio recording attributed to Cheikha Trax circulated on social media. The content of this recording was perceived as derogatory and potentially inciting discrimination and hatred among the community. Furthermore, the case escalated when Cheikha Trax's sister-in-law was also implicated, following direct accusations made by Trax herself, claiming that the sister-in-law had shared private information online, harming her reputation.
On October 13, the public prosecutor decided to detain Cheikha Trax as part of the ongoing investigation, charging her with inciting discrimination and hatred through electronic means, as well as making threats and committing acts of violence. Both women remained in custody while the hearings progressed, which were marked by multiple delays to allow for adequate preparation of defenses and presentation of digital evidence by the plaintiffs.
After several hours of deliberation on the case, the court concluded the marathon session with the sentencing, leaving a significant mark on the Moroccan entertainment landscape and raising discussions about the responsibilities of public figures in their communications.
