Cairo Shadows: A Captivating Tale from Egypt’s Zabaleen Community
A significant chapter in Cairo’s recent history is once again captivating the international cinema audience through the film Cairo Shadows, which delves into the lives of the Zabaleen community in Manshiyet Nasser and the far-reaching impacts of Egypt’s controversial 2009 decision to cull pigs amid fears of swine flu. This poignant narrative is co-directed by brothers Rani and Salem Massalha, and it is poised to make its world premiere at the esteemed Marrakech International Film Festival, scheduled to take place from November 20 to 28. The film has garnered attention following its selection for this prestigious festival, marking a significant milestone in the Massalha brothers' filmmaking journey.
A Heartfelt Exploration of Community and Crisis
Cairo Shadows is inspired by true events and follows the story of Salem, who returns to the Zabaleen district after a prolonged absence. Upon his return, he discovers his father struggling under the weight of harsh realities, while his sister has married a local entrepreneur in the recycling business. Faced with the responsibility of managing his family’s former pig farm, Salem endeavors to rebuild his life and reconnect with the community that surrounds him. However, escalating global concerns regarding swine flu and the government's drastic decision to cull all pigs in the vicinity turn his world—and that of his neighbors—upside down, jeopardizing their livelihoods and well-being.
This film poignantly illustrates the human and social repercussions of a governmental crisis that reaches far beyond mere policy decisions, showcasing the profound impact on families and a community whose economic activities are intricately tied to pig farming and waste recycling.
The film boasts a talented cast, including prominent Egyptian actors such as Hassan Malek, Tara Emad, Kamel El Basha, and Hamza El Eily, among others. The screenplay has been co-written by Gladys Marciano, Valerie Maureau, and Rani Massalha, with producers including Muriel Merlin, Habib Attia, Ahmed Fawzy, Isabelle Moulin, and Rani Massalha himself. The creative team is further enhanced by cinematographer Éric Devin, editor Julia Gregory, and composer Amine Bouhafa, all of whom contribute significantly to the film's artistic vision.
Rani Massalha, who previously made waves with his short film Elvis of Nazareth, which won the UniFrance Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, is joined by Salem Massalha, who is making his feature directorial debut with this project. With a rich background in social entrepreneurship and international development, Salem brings a unique perspective to the film's narrative. The brothers have emphasized the importance of collaborating with an Egyptian sales agent who understands their cultural context, believing that this will facilitate the film’s introduction to international markets while maintaining its authentic essence. Cairo Shadows is an international co-production involving Egypt, France, Belgium, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, produced by Les Films du Tambour, with global sales managed by MAD World.
