Moroccan Butchers Trained for Italian Supermarkets: A New Opportunity in Casablanca

Training Program for Moroccan Butchers in Casablanca

In a significant development for both Morocco and Italy, thirty-eight Moroccan professionals have successfully completed a training program in Casablanca designed specifically for the butchery departments of Italian supermarkets. This initiative comes at a critical time as Italy faces a shortage of qualified personnel in its retail sector. The training, which took place at the Cité des métiers et des compétences in Casablanca-Settat, was attended by the Italian Ambassador to Morocco, Pasquale Salzano, who underscored the importance of this collaboration. The program has been tailored to equip participants with the necessary skills and language proficiency to work in Conad, one of Italy's leading supermarket chains.

This training initiative was launched to address the recruitment challenges faced by Italian companies, and it facilitates professional immigration outside the usual quota restrictions that govern such employment. The project is spearheaded by Synergie Italia, in collaboration with various Italian and Moroccan partners, including the Luna association. Initially intended for forty trainees, the program received approval from the Italian Ministry of Labor on July 27, 2026, and ultimately thirty-eight individuals completed the training successfully.

Immigration Without Quota Restrictions

The program operates under Article 23 of Italian immigration law, which allows foreign nationals who have undergone a recognized professional and language training in their home country to be recruited in Italy without being subject to the annual quotas established by the Flussi decree. To employ these candidates, Italian employers must apply for a work permit, after which the candidates can obtain their visas. While the training has concluded successfully, the actual relocation of these Moroccan professionals to Italy and the signing of their contracts are yet to be announced.

Ambassador Pasquale Salzano highlighted that this pre-departure training not only meets the pressing needs of Italian businesses but also acknowledges Morocco's own demand for skilled workers due to its industrial growth. The overarching goal of this initiative is to foster mobility programs that align with the economic needs of both countries, thereby creating beneficial opportunities for Moroccan workers while addressing Italy's labor shortages.
