Exploring Morocco: Serge and Éliane's Adventure with Their 4x4 Camper

From the Roads of Europe to the Trails of Morocco

Once a long-haul truck driver who traversed Europe for over 25 years, Serge, originally from the Nice region, has transitioned into a new chapter of life in retirement. Together with his wife, Éliane, they now seek adventure in their meticulously equipped Fuso 4x4 camper, which allows them to venture beyond the conventional asphalt roads. Their story is one of a couple passionately in love with the freedom that travel brings, eager to explore uncharted territories and embrace the beauty of nature.

Serge's extensive career in international road transport began as a simple driver and eventually led him to run his own business, navigating his trucks across Europe from Spain to the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium. Reflecting on his years in the industry, he acknowledges the changes that have occurred, noting, "It was a fantastic profession 30 or 40 years ago. Today, it has become complicated due to competition from Eastern countries and rising fuel prices." Despite these challenges, his passion for the open road remains unwavering.

The Allure of the 4x4: Conquering the Unconquerable

The couple's love affair with camping began in 2006 with a two-week rental, but it wasn't until 2010 that they purchased their first leisure vehicle, a compact 7.10-meter integrated camper. Over the years, they have owned four different integrated campers, balancing leisure trips with Serge's professional obligations. However, inspired by stories from fellow travelers on social media, they felt a strong desire to explore new horizons off the beaten path. This led them to transition from a conventional camper to a custom-built 4x4 vehicle.

Serge explained, "I watched the Fusotistes, a YouTube channel about traveling in Fuso trucks, and it convinced me. I carefully compared various models and chose one from Skapade that fit our budget. While it may not have the flashy appearance of a classic profile, it is built to withstand the rigors of rough terrains, as every detail is crafted to endure the challenges of the trails." Their decision quickly proved invaluable during their months-long journey through Morocco, where they covered over 10,000 kilometers.

Éliane fondly recalls their experiences on the Moroccan trails, expressing her amazement at the truck's capabilities. "What struck me most was its ability to overcome obstacles. We faced sandy paths and rocky trails, but the truck handled it all with ease!" The couple fondly remembers a particularly challenging route between Errachidia and Merzouga, where they successfully navigated a steep descent that others doubted they could conquer.

Moments spent camping in the serene desert, enveloped by the tranquility of the dunes and the enchanting sunsets, remain etched in their memories. It has been a childhood dream come true, facilitated by their exceptional vehicle.

Moving Forward: The Decision to Sell

Despite their beloved truck's remarkable autonomy, equipped with 350 liters of fresh water and 180 liters of waste water, Serge and Éliane have decided to put it up for sale. Their choice is influenced by several factors, including the different regulations governing road travel in Morocco compared to France, where restrictions significantly limit off-road driving.

As they consider their future, physical limitations and the realities of aging play a role in their decision. Éliane candidly shares, "We are getting older, and I have back problems. Climbing the ladder to access the cabin is becoming increasingly challenging, so we are anticipating the future." Additionally, they seek a vehicle that is more suited for the European road network, focusing on comfort and efficiency for travels in Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

While they are open to selling their 4x4, they remain enthusiastic about the idea of returning to explore the sunny paths of Morocco in January if a buyer does not materialize. Ultimately, their journey is fueled by the desire for absolute freedom to experience the world, with their feet in the sand and a heart full of adventure.
