Exciting Lineup for the 23rd Marrakech International Film Festival

The vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco, is set to become the epicenter of cinematic celebration as it hosts the 23rd edition of its esteemed International Film Festival from November 20 to 28, 2023. This year, the festival will feature a remarkable lineup of 76 films hailing from 39 countries, promising a rich array of storytelling that spans diverse cultures and genres. Notably, the festival will present ten films that will premiere globally, ensuring that audiences experience the thrill of seeing new works for the very first time. Twelve films have also benefited from the support of the "Atelier Atlas" workshops, while eleven films are competing for a chance to represent their countries in the prestigious Oscars race.

The screenings are set to take place in iconic venues such as the Palais des Congrès, the Colisée Cinema, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, creating an immersive atmosphere for film enthusiasts. The jury, led by the acclaimed actress Marion Cotillard, will award the coveted 'Golden Star' to one of the 14 feature films that are either debut or second efforts from their directors. Among the titles in contention are "Ben’imana" by Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo, a poignant exploration of reconciliation after the Rwandan genocide, and "Congo Boy" by Rafiki Fanyala, alongside "Furies" by Rami Kadi, which delves into a heist amid the Lebanese crisis.

This year's festival will kick off with the comedy film "Mona," directed by Jesse Eisenberg and starring Julianne Moore, setting a lively tone for the events to follow. The gala screenings will also showcase two world premieres: "Laila and the Night" by Felipe Barbosa, inspired by the life of Moroccan photographer Laila Alaoui, and "His Weakest Creatures" by Omar Hilal, featuring renowned actors Ahmed Helmy and Hend Sabri. Additionally, prominent filmmakers such as John Turturro, James Gray, and Luca Guadagnino will present their works, including the film "Artificial," which portrays the rise of Sam Altman, with Andrew Garfield in the lead role.

Highlighting Morocco's cinematic talent, the film "La más dulce" by Leila Marrakchi has been selected as the country's entry for the Oscars. The festival's "Horizons" section will feature 21 films, showcasing the latest works from notable directors such as Hamaguchi, Mungiu, Pawlikowski, Kore-eda, and Moretti, with a strong emphasis on Arab cinema. Furthermore, "Worod Marrakech" by Genevra Elkan, co-starring Fanny Ardant, was filmed locally and represents the festival's commitment to highlighting regional talent. In the "Eleventh Continent" segment, audiences can look forward to 13 films, including restored classics like "Nahla" and "Tilai." The "Panorama of Moroccan Cinema" will present six films, opening with "Bardi" by Tala Hadid, alongside three world premieres. In total, the program will showcase eleven Moroccan films, reaffirming the country's vibrant film industry. For younger audiences, comedy star Jamel Debbouze will unveil his film "The Girl in the Clouds," adding a touch of humor to the festival.
