Chidinma Anyah's Culinary Initiative 'A Taste of Nigeria' Launches in Lagos
In a groundbreaking move for Nigeria’s creative and hospitality sectors, actress-turned-chef Chidinma Anyah has officially launched 'A Taste of Nigeria with DinewithDinma', a culinary initiative designed to elevate the nation's food culture and promote its rich heritage through engaging cooking experiences. This innovative program is particularly aimed at Nigerians living abroad and international tourists who are keen to immerse themselves in the authentic tastes and traditions of Nigeria.
In an insightful conversation with Sunday Vanguard Potpourri, Anyah revealed that the idea for this initiative had been brewing for over a year, sparked by a transformative experience during her solo vacation to Morocco. She described participating in a traditional Moroccan cooking class as a pivotal moment that opened her eyes to the potential of using food as a medium for cultural exploration and tourism promotion. Inspired by her experience, Anyah questioned why Nigeria, with its vast and diverse culinary heritage, could not offer similar opportunities for visitors eager to engage with the country’s culture beyond the usual tourist attractions.
“I had so much fun, and it got me thinking: why can’t we create something similar in Nigeria? As a chef, I saw an opportunity to make Nigerian cuisine part of our tourism experience,” she emphasized. Many international visitors to Nigeria often associate their trips with nightlife, beach outings, and boat cruises; however, Anyah is convinced that a unique Nigerian cooking experience would provide a different and enriching way for them to connect with the country’s cultural identity.
Beyond merely teaching participants how to prepare local dishes, Anyah’s initiative aims to weave in the stories, traditions, and hospitality that are integral to Nigerian food. Reflecting on her Moroccan experience, she highlighted how food serves as an expression of a people's history, culture, and identity. Anyah noted the distinct culinary identities of Morocco and Nigeria, pointing out that while Moroccan cuisine is characterized by its generous use of herbs and vegetables, Nigerian dishes are celebrated for their bold flavors, rich spices, and diverse combinations of proteins and carbohydrates. Despite these differences, she believes there are traditional Nigerian dishes that also prominently feature herbs, making the exploration of various cooking traditions an exciting venture.
For Anyah, the purpose of her Moroccan trip was not to import another country’s culinary culture but rather to draw inspiration from how food can be packaged as a tourism attraction, which she now aims to adapt to Nigeria’s unique culinary landscape. As she transitions from acting to the culinary world, Anyah refutes any claims that she has abandoned her acting career, clarifying that cooking has always been a significant part of her life. Growing up with a mother who was a caterer, she developed her passion for food early on, which laid the foundation for her culinary aspirations.
“While taking a break from acting to work on myself and prepare for bigger opportunities, I thought, why not turn my love for cooking into a business?” she shared, indicating that her new venture complements her artistic ambitions rather than replaces them. Anyah is determined to pursue both her interests, revealing her dreams of attending film school in the future. “I haven’t given up on acting. I still have dreams of film school. But for now, I’m choosing to turn another passion into something meaningful and profitable,” she added, highlighting her commitment to embracing both her passions.
To differentiate her initiative from conventional cooking classes, Anyah envisions creating an immersive cultural experience that becomes a must-do activity for anyone visiting Nigeria. The program is designed to operate year-round, not limited to the bustling December holiday season known as Detty December, ensuring that visitors can participate at any time. Her immediate offering includes a three-hour interactive cooking experience in Lagos, where participants will learn to prepare authentic Nigerian dishes alongside Anyah and other skilled cooks. This experience will also feature food tasting, discussions on the origins and cultural significance of selected meals, and opportunities for participants to savor the dishes they create, ultimately leaving with recipes, gifts, and lasting memories.
Anyah’s ultimate vision is to establish a platform where Nigerian cuisine can gain greater visibility as a tourism attraction, allowing visitors and Nigerians in the diaspora to reconnect with their cultural roots. She hopes to transform the way people experience Nigerian food by encouraging them not just to enjoy local dishes but also to learn how to prepare them, thus fostering a deeper appreciation for Nigeria’s culinary arts.
