Volkswagen Unveils Ambitious Battery Production Plans in Morocco to Cut Costs

Volkswagen's Strategic Move to Morocco for Battery Production

In a bold strategic initiative, Volkswagen has identified Morocco as a crucial pillar in its quest to manufacture more affordable batteries in Europe. The German automotive giant, through its subsidiary PowerCo and in partnership with Chinese manufacturer Gotion, is gearing up to establish a state-of-the-art facility in Kenitra, Morocco. This plant is set to produce an impressive 100,000 tons annually of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery materials. A significant portion of this output will be directed to supply the upcoming gigafactory in Sagunto, Valencia, which is scheduled to commence operations in 2027. This collaborative effort aims not only to secure essential component supplies but also to reduce reliance on imports from China, a move that underscores the strategic importance of Morocco in the global battery supply chain.

Morocco as a Vital Supplier of Battery Materials

The partnership between Volkswagen and Gotion encompasses the establishment of a joint venture in Kenitra, dedicated to the production of active materials for LFP battery cathodes. This initiative is particularly significant as it positions Morocco as a vital supplier of battery materials to both Spain and Slovakia. With a projected annual production capacity of 100,000 tons, the plant will primarily serve the cell factories located in Sagunto and Šurany, Slovakia. Notably, Gotion will hold a 51% stake in the Moroccan venture, while PowerCo will manage the remaining 49%. The rationale behind selecting Morocco is clear; the country possesses approximately 68% of the world's estimated phosphate rock reserves, a critical resource for the production of lithium iron phosphate batteries. This technology, which utilizes lithium, iron, and phosphate while eschewing nickel and cobalt found in other battery chemistries, is lauded for its potentially lower costs, high durability, and excellent thermal stability.

In addition to reducing dependence on Chinese imports, Volkswagen's collaboration with Gotion represents a strategic pivot toward localizing parts of its supply chain closer to Europe. By establishing a manufacturing presence in Morocco, the company aims to diversify material sources and minimize logistical distances. Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, has emphasized that this partnership not only strengthens the resilience of the supply chain but also accelerates the industrialization of their projects. However, it is important to note that the operation is still contingent on regulatory approvals and closing conditions, with no definitive timeline yet established for the commencement of supplies from Kenitra. If these ambitious plans come to fruition, Sagunto is poised to become a central hub in a new industrial supply chain that integrates Moroccan resources, Chinese technology, and European electric vehicle battery manufacturing.
