Treasure Hunting on Agadir's Beaches: The Thrill of Discovery in Morocco

Discovering Hidden Treasures Along Agadir's Coastline

In the vibrant coastal city of Agadir, Morocco, the pursuit of hidden treasures has captivated the interest of many, particularly for those like Mustapha Harmouch, a 33-year-old content creator. Armed with a metal detector, he meticulously scans the sandy shores of Agadir’s Corniche, completely absorbed in the thrill of the hunt. Surrounded by the lively sounds of surfers, children frolicking in the waves, and families enjoying their day at the beach, Harmouch remains focused on the singular beep of his detector—signaling the potential discovery of something buried beneath the sand. This exhilarating uncertainty drives Harmouch's passion for metal detecting, as he explains, “The excitement comes partly from not knowing what lies beneath the sand.”

Harmouch's journey into this engaging hobby began around four years ago when he purchased a Tianxun TX 850 metal detector online. What initially started as a casual pastime has evolved into an integral part of his YouTube channel, Stofishing, which boasts approximately 123,000 subscribers. Each outing offers Harmouch a unique opportunity to discover historical artifacts, including ancient coins from significant historical periods and regions such as Al Haouz and Fez. One of his most remarkable finds occurred in the coastal town of Sidi Ouassay, located about 65 kilometers south of Agadir, where he uncovered 14 old Moroccan falus coins in a single location. Despite some being too corroded to read, he excitedly reveals that the oldest dates back to 1289 on the Hijri calendar, showcasing the rich historical narrative behind these artifacts.

For Harmouch, collecting these coins transcends any monetary value; they serve as tangible memories of the past. He humorously recalls a moment when he mistakenly believed he had discovered a meteorite, only to find it was a common mineral, illustrating the delightful surprises that come with his adventures. This blend of possibility and excitement keeps him returning to the beaches around Agadir, where he typically goes metal detecting about four times a month. Often accompanied by fellow enthusiasts from the Moroccan Association for Research and Exploration Enthusiasts, he prefers locations like Taghazout and Agadir’s Corniche, where the litter is minimal, enhancing the chances of making significant finds.

Balancing Hobby and Legal Responsibilities

While the allure of discovering valuable items remains a key aspect of this hobby, Harmouch emphasizes his commitment to ethical practices. He has found various treasures, including a small gold ring in Taghazout, and is dedicated to returning lost items to their rightful owners. However, Morocco’s regulatory framework governing archaeological discoveries is stringent. Law 22-80, which regulates archaeological prospecting, mandates that unauthorized searches are prohibited, and any significant finds must be reported to authorities. Harmouch and his fellow detectorists are well aware of these regulations, ensuring they conduct their hobby responsibly by carrying identification, respecting private property, and treating their activities as a leisure pursuit rather than a profession.

Other enthusiasts, like Mohamed Botaib—a former sports coach— regard metal detecting as a pastime rather than a source of income. Botaib enjoys searching beaches, forests, and mountains, often finding modest treasures like common coins and rings, while Jalal Zegnoune, a maintenance technician from Casablanca, focuses on the practical side of the hobby, removing hazardous debris from the beaches to ensure safety for fellow beachgoers. Zegnoune shares that his metal detecting expeditions have unearthed coins, jewelry, and even lost fishing gear, contributing to the clean-up efforts of Morocco's beautiful coastlines. The community of detectorists in Agadir not only cherishes the thrill of discovery but also embraces the opportunity to engage with each other, fostering a sense of camaraderie through their shared passion.

Ultimately, the quest for hidden treasures along Morocco's picturesque beaches represents more than just the pursuit of valuable items; it embodies a spirit of exploration, environmental stewardship, and a deep-rooted appreciation for the rich history embedded in the sands of Agadir.
