Major Healthcare Reforms in Morocco's Settat and Kenitra Regions
In a significant announcement made on November 6, 2026, Morocco's Health Minister, Younes Bjijou, addressed the Lower House, outlining critical reforms aimed at enhancing the healthcare system across the nation. He emphasized the urgent need for accelerating project implementations and ensuring that citizens have effective access to quality healthcare services. Among the prominent challenges identified were the necessity to maintain continuity of care and significantly reduce waiting times for healthcare services.
During his presentation of the draft sectoral budget for 2027 before the Social Sectors Committee, Minister Bjijou articulated a clear vision for the future of healthcare in Morocco. He underscored the importance of shifting focus from a multitude of ongoing projects to prioritize those initiatives that would yield the most substantial benefits. This transition involves moving from mere planning to a more accelerated implementation phase while closely monitoring resources and evaluating the results achieved.
The minister outlined seven interrelated priorities that align with the Government Program's guidelines. These priorities are designed to create a tangible impact on healthcare system performance and the quality of services provided. Notably, he announced that the provincial hospitals in Settat and Kenitra are set to be transformed into university hospitals (CHUs). This transformation aims to bring third-level healthcare services closer to the residents of these provinces, while also facilitating clinical training and hospital internships for medical students enrolled in nearby faculties.
Furthermore, Minister Bjijou unveiled plans for a new university hospital to be constructed in Casablanca, which will boast a substantial bed capacity. This initiative is a direct response to the increasing demographic pressure in the region, aiming to cater to the growing healthcare needs of its population. These developments mark a significant step forward in Morocco's commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and quality for all its citizens.
