Small Team, Big Ambitions: The Morocco-Spain Tunnel Project
In a remarkable development for infrastructure linking Morocco and Spain, a dedicated team of just ten individuals is working tirelessly on the ambitious tunnel project under the Strait of Gibraltar. This project, overseen by the National Company for the Study of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED), is set to see an investment of 120 million dirhams, with plans aimed for completion by the year 2027. The modest size of the team, comprising five managerial staff, two engineers, one middle manager, and two operational agents, highlights the efficiency and determination of this public structure in coordinating extensive research and development efforts essential for the tunnel's realization.
The collaborative effort between Moroccan and Spanish engineers is crucial, as SNED partners with Spain's SECEGSA to review studies that have been conducted over several decades. The scope of this investment includes geological investigations, environmental assessments, economic evaluations, legal considerations, and promotional activities for the future link. This multifaceted approach ensures that all aspects of the project are meticulously planned and executed, paving the way for a successful connection between the two countries.
Innovative Preparations and Advanced Studies
The preparatory work for the tunnel project involves the mobilization of multiple specialized organizations. Tectonic measurements are being performed using underwater seismic sensors, known as OBS, positioned on both sides of the Strait. Additionally, the teams are undertaking the vital task of updating data related to the underwater topography and geological characteristics of the subsoil, which are fundamental for the tunnel's construction.
A significant focus of these preparatory efforts is the future reconnaissance tunnel, designed to facilitate direct examination of the terrains that the railway tunnel will traverse. Preliminary studies are concentrated on assessing rock formations and excavation conditions, ensuring that potential challenges are identified and addressed well in advance.
Moreover, SNED collaborates with the Center for Studies of Transport for Western Mediterranean (CETMO) to update traffic forecasts between Africa and Europe. This collaboration is supported by three cooperative agreements between Moroccan and Spanish technical institutions, further solidifying the commitment to the project's success. In parallel, the company is also digitizing its archives, developing an electronic portal, and drafting a roadmap for digital transformation, demonstrating an innovative approach to project management.
