New Phase of Morocco-Spain Continental Link Project Set for 2027

Continental Connection Between Morocco and Spain: A Strategic Endeavor

The highly anticipated continental link project connecting Morocco and Spain through the Strait of Gibraltar is poised to enter a new phase of technical and engineering studies in 2027. This significant initiative aims to establish a reliable connection between the African and European continents via an underwater tunnel, facilitating the movement of people and goods across the Mediterranean. The project will revisit previous studies and initiate additional measures necessary for completing the essential data related to this strategic endeavor.

According to official data included in the budget file for the infrastructure and water sector for the fiscal year 2027, prepared by the National Company for the Studies of the Strait of Gibraltar (SNED), the upcoming program will encompass a thorough review of all previous studies associated with the project. Furthermore, there will be a continued focus on various technical, environmental, and economic aspects relevant to the undertaking.

The allocated investment budget for this ambitious project is set at 120 million dirhams for the year 2027. This allocation is part of the ongoing collaborative work program between Morocco and Spain, with both nations represented by their respective national companies, SNED and its Spanish counterpart, SECEGSA. This partnership exemplifies the sustained institutional coordination between the two countries concerning this transcontinental initiative.

The announced budget will be distributed across five main pillars within a tri-phased action plan. This plan includes reviewing previously completed studies, establishing a unique environmental system for the project, exploring the geological structures beneath the proposed route, as well as assessing its economic, social, environmental, geostrategic, and legal dimensions. Additionally, promotion efforts for the project will be part of this comprehensive plan.

The continental link project aims to create a permanent connection between northern Morocco and southern Spain through the Strait of Gibraltar. This connection will streamline the movement of individuals and goods between Africa and Europe, opening new horizons for trade and logistics and enhancing both countries' positions within international transportation networks.

However, the geological nature of the Strait of Gibraltar, characterized by deep marine depths and complex terrestrial formations, presents significant technical and engineering challenges for the realization of this project. As a result, completing studies related to the route, infrastructure, safety, and economic feasibility is essential for determining the prospects for moving into implementation phases. Meanwhile, Morocco and Spain continue to collaborate on developing a shared vision for this continental link.
