Morocco Releases 359 Prisoners Under Reconciliation Program Targeting Extremism

Morocco's Commitment to Rehabilitating Extremism Convicts

On Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Moroccan prison administration announced the release of 359 inmates convicted of crimes related to extremism and terrorism under the Reconciliation Program initiated in 2017. This announcement came during a presentation of the prison administration's budget for 2027 at the House of Representatives, where Mohamed Salah Tamak, the General Director of Moroccan Prisons, provided detailed insights into the program's impact and ongoing initiatives.

Tamak highlighted that among the released inmates, 234 benefited from royal pardons, while the remaining 125 had completed their prison sentences. He further elaborated on the latest session of the Reconciliation Program, indicating that 48 inmates participated in the third iteration organized this year. This initiative is part of Morocco's broader strategy aimed at addressing issues of radicalization and ensuring the reintegration of former inmates into society.

The Reconciliation Program is overseen by a dedicated center in partnership with the prison administration, employing a comprehensive approach that combines intellectual and religious rehabilitation with psychological and social support. This holistic strategy aims to combat extremism through religious education and psychological counseling, as well as organizing workshops focused on legal knowledge and the promotion of human rights and socio-economic frameworks.

In 2016, Morocco adopted a new strategy concerning prisoners and prison staff, with the objective of ensuring the safety and security of inmates, improving detention conditions, and preparing detainees for social and economic reintegration. The following year marked the launch of the Reconciliation Program in collaboration with the Mohammedan Scholars Association and the National Human Rights Council, further solidifying Morocco’s commitment to fighting extremism through education and rehabilitation.
