Morocco Orders 18 New Avelia Horizon TGVs to Enhance High-Speed Rail to Marrakech

Morocco's High-Speed Rail Expansion with Avelia Horizon TGVs

On November 6, 2023, the new TGV service operated by SNCF successfully transported its inaugural passengers between Paris and Marseille, marking a significant milestone in the realm of high-speed rail travel. This launch heralds the introduction of the Avelia Horizon platform developed by Alstom, a French multinational company renowned for its rail transport solutions. In a forward-looking move, Morocco has secured an order for 18 of these state-of-the-art trains, aimed at extending the high-speed rail line from Kenitra to the vibrant city of Marrakech.

Departing from Paris-Gare-de-Lyon early in the morning, the TGV arrived in Marseille around 1 PM, signifying the commencement of its commercial operations. Initially referred to as TGV M during its development phase, this train represents the fifth generation of French high-speed trains. In a press release on the same day, Alstom confirmed that this model is the first from its Avelia Horizon range to carry passengers, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation in rail technology.

Revolutionary Features of the Avelia Horizon

The design of the Avelia Horizon trains has been completely reimagined, featuring two shorter power cars compared to previous models, which allows for the addition of a ninth passenger car without extending the overall length of the train. This innovative configuration enables up to 20% more seating capacity, accommodating a maximum of 740 passengers, depending on the specific interior layout chosen. Furthermore, all passenger cars are designed with two levels, enhancing comfort and efficiency.

Alstom has also reported that these new trains consume 20% less energy compared to the previous generation, resulting in significant operational savings. With a higher passenger count, the energy cost per traveler per kilometer at full capacity is reduced by an impressive 32%. Additionally, the maintenance costs are expected to decrease by over 30%, thanks to simplified equipment and advanced systems that can foresee potential malfunctions.

In France, the SNCF has opted for a two-level bar car, modular spaces separating first and second classes, and an accessible boarding system for passengers with disabilities, reflecting the versatility of the Avelia Horizon platform, which accommodates various configurations based on operator needs.

The National Office of Railways in Morocco (ONCF) signed a contract with Alstom on March 28, 2025, for the procurement of 18 Avelia Horizon trains, which are capable of speeds exceeding 300 km/h. This ambitious project, backed by a funding of 781 million euros from the French Treasury, aims to expand Morocco's high-speed rail network to include Marrakech.

The development plan outlines the construction of approximately 430 kilometers of new rail line between Kenitra and Marrakech, passing through major urban centers such as Rabat and Casablanca. The infrastructure is engineered to support speeds of up to 350 km/h. According to projections made by the Moroccan government, the travel time from Tangier to Marrakech will be reduced to just 2 hours and 40 minutes, saving more than two hours compared to current travel times. The Tangier-Casablanca route is expected to take just 1 hour and 40 minutes, and Rabat will connect to Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca in just 35 minutes, including a stop at the new Benslimane Stadium. Additionally, a high-speed train maintenance center is set to be established in Marrakech, further cementing the city’s role in Morocco’s rail infrastructure.
