Moroccan Innovator Rachid Yazami's Breakthrough: Battery Cells Charged in Just Seven Minutes

Revolutionizing Battery Technology in Morocco

In a significant advancement for battery technology, Moroccan scientist Rachid Yazami, through his company KVI based in Singapore, has announced a groundbreaking development that allows a battery cell to be charged from 0% to 100% in a mere seven minutes. This remarkable feat was achieved using a commercial lithium iron phosphate cell, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for faster charging solutions in energy storage. Notably, during the testing, the battery cell was charged from 10% to 70% in just 3 minutes and 42 seconds while maintaining a temperature below 50°C, showcasing not only efficiency but also safety in the charging process.

However, it is crucial to note that these results were obtained from a single battery cell and do not currently extend to entire electric vehicle battery packs. Therefore, while this technology presents a promising future for rapid charging, it does not yet indicate that electric vehicles can completely replenish their range in seven minutes. The method employed by KVI utilizes nonlinear voltammetry (NLV), which significantly differs from traditional charging systems. While conventional systems primarily focus on controlling the current supplied to the battery, NLV adjusts the voltage dynamically, allowing the current to evolve according to the electrochemical processes occurring within the battery. Yazami emphasizes that the challenge lies not only in increasing the electricity flow in a shorter time but also in achieving a unique voltage profile that he likens to a fingerprint specific to each battery.

The company is actively working on commercializing this technology, with plans to prioritize the automotive market, particularly electric vehicles. They are also expanding their research initiatives in Singapore. The versatility of NLV charging systems is noteworthy as it is compatible with various battery chemistries beyond electric vehicles, including those used in smartphones and power tools. This adaptability could catalyze widespread adoption across multiple industries.

In a recent development, KVI entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Japanese manufacturer SkyDrive to explore the application of this rapid charging technology in electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. The global electric vehicle market is projected to witness substantial growth, with sales expected to exceed 20 million in 2025 and reach around 23 million in 2026, reflecting a 15% increase. This promising data underscores the potential impact of Yazami's innovations on the future of transportation and energy solutions.
