Marrakech Concludes the 70th International Bar Association Conference
On Saturday evening, the vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco, played host to the successful conclusion of the 70th International Bar Association (IBA) conference. This significant event spanned four days and featured in-depth discussions regarding the future of the legal profession and its crucial role in safeguarding rights and freedoms while reinforcing the rule of law. Legal professionals from across the globe gathered to reflect on their responsibilities in the face of profound transformations and major challenges currently faced worldwide, particularly concerning the rule of law, peace, justice, and human dignity.
The conference addressed two pressing themes: the intersection of major sporting events with human rights, economic development, and sustainability, as well as the role of law in international trade. These topics opened the floor for robust debates and exchanges of perspectives on how legal frameworks and the legal profession can adapt to and respond to economic and societal shifts on a global scale. The program included over 45 specialized sessions covering diverse areas of law, allowing participants from more than 90 countries to share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise.
In a statement to the official news agency, the newly elected President of the International Bar Association, Sylvester Tando de Marsac, highlighted that discussions particularly focused on managing artificial intelligence and utilizing it as a tool to enhance professional capabilities while also ensuring its use is carefully regulated due to potential risks. He emphasized the IBA's strong commitment to defending the independence of the legal profession, recalling the organization's contribution to the drafting of the European Convention on the Protection of the Legal Profession.
Furthermore, Tando de Marsac reaffirmed that the IBA will continue its efforts to advocate for lawyers who face threats or obstacles that impede their ability to practice independently. In a similar vein, Idriss Chater, the President of the 70th IBA conference, noted that the organization closely monitors significant current issues affecting the legal profession, especially the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the challenges posed by its use in the legal field.
The conference aimed to provide a platform for analyzing legal developments and sharing experiences across various fields of law. It also featured the General Assembly of the International Bar Association and organized several regional forums, including those for African lawyers, lawyers from Central and Eastern Europe, Latin American lawyers, and Italian-speaking lawyers.
Looking ahead, the 71st International Bar Association conference is scheduled to take place from October 27 to 31, 2027, in Brussels, coinciding with the centenary celebration of this international organization. Established in 1927, the International Bar Association is a multicultural global organization active in 110 countries, dedicated to supporting professional development, promoting continuous training and professional communication, and enhancing the rule of law. The association comprises nearly 2,000 individual members and represents, through its collective members, various bar associations and unions, over two million lawyers and legal professionals across 110 countries.
Since 1971, the International Bar Association has held the status of a non-governmental organization with special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, as well as participatory status with the Council of Europe. The association is also represented at the main United Nations offices in New York, Geneva, and Vienna.
