Dakar Rally Moves Back to Africa with New Route in 2027
The renowned Dakar Rally is set to return to its African roots in 2027, with the thrilling competition starting in Loulé-Faro, Portugal, and culminating in the vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco. This significant shift comes as the event takes a one-year hiatus from Saudi Arabia, where it has been held for several years. The newly announced dates for the rally are from January 9 to 23, 2027, yet they remain pending approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).
This 49th edition of the Dakar Rally will cover a staggering total distance of 7,824 kilometers, of which 4,341 kilometers will involve timed stages. The competition is designed to excite and challenge participants, featuring a prologue followed by 12 demanding stages, with a well-deserved rest day scheduled in Agadir, Morocco.
A Challenging Journey Across Diverse Terrains
The rally kicks off on January 9, 2027, with the prologue taking place in Portugal's picturesque Algarve region. Following the prologue, the first special stage will occur on January 10, leading competitors across the sea by ferry to Nador, Morocco. On January 11, participants will transfer to Bouarfa, before embarking on a journey southward through the breathtaking landscapes of Zagora and Agadir, where they will pause for a rest day to regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead.
The following week promises to delve deeper into the stunning desert terrain, with the route winding its way north to the grand finish line in Marrakech. Each timed stage is anticipated to cover between 350 to 500 kilometers, ensuring that competitors will face a variety of obstacles, including the crucial task of navigation—a skill that could make or break their day in the relentless rally.
This shift back to Africa marks Dakar's first return to the continent since 2007, highlighting the event's rich heritage and connection to its original roots. While the rally will not conclude in the traditional city of Dakar, the allure of Marrakech as the destination is sure to engage participants and fans alike.
The decision to relocate comes as the A.S.O. and the Saudi Motorsport Company announced on October 25 that the Saudi event would be postponed due to recent regional developments that posed potential risks. However, Saudi Arabia is set to welcome the Dakar Rally back in 2028 for its momentous 50th edition, provided that the regional tensions have eased by then.
With the combination of new stages and the return to Africa, the 2027 Dakar Rally is shaping up to be an unforgettable experience. It promises to attract rally enthusiasts eager for a blend of adventure, endurance, and the thrill of navigating through challenging terrains. January 2027 is poised to be an exhilarating month for rally fans as the Dakar Rally once again embraces its African legacy.
