Morocco Plans to Launch Nador West Med Port and Expand Tangier Med Port Capacity

Morocco's Ambitious Port Expansion Plans

In a significant move aimed at bolstering its position in global trade and supply chains, Morocco has announced plans to inaugurate the Nador West Med Port while simultaneously expanding the capacity of the Tangier Med Port. The expansion of the Tangier Med Port, which will involve the construction of a new facility dubbed "Tangier Med 3," is expected to increase its overall capacity to an impressive 20 million containers annually. The projected investment for this ambitious undertaking is approximately 8 billion Moroccan Dirhams (MAD), equivalent to about 800 million USD. This initiative is part of Morocco's broader strategy to enhance its maritime infrastructure and ensure sustainable economic development in the region.

Operational Readiness of Nador West Med Port

Additionally, preparations are underway for the operational launch of the first phase of the Nador West Med Port, located in the northeastern part of the country. This phase is designed to handle around 3.5 million containers upon completion. The second phase is scheduled to commence operations in April 2027, with a capacity of 1.8 million containers. The total investments allocated for both phases of the Nador West Med project amount to approximately 54 billion MAD (around 5.4 billion USD), which encompasses various strategic facilities, including a fuel storage facility and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal aimed at enhancing the kingdom's energy security. With the announcement made during a royal meeting chaired by King Mohammed VI at the royal palace in Rabat, the importance of these projects has been emphasized not only for economic growth but also for creating local job opportunities. The investments are expected to generate around 1,400 direct jobs and approximately 20,000 indirect jobs, supported by infrastructure projects like a railway connection linking Selouan to the port and a highway connecting the port to the city of Jerada. King Mohammed VI has also stressed the need for vocational training programs to align with the emerging industrial and logistical requirements, facilitating youth integration into the labor market.
