Libyan Jewish Delegation Visits Morocco to Discover Heritage Preservation
From October 29 to November 11, a delegation of Libyan Jews is embarking on a significant visit to the Kingdom of Morocco. This initiative aims to explore and understand Morocco's exemplary model of preserving and protecting Jewish heritage while also promoting interfaith dialogue and coexistence. The visit is organized by the Adam Foundation for Human Brotherhood, which seeks to enhance cultural and human communication between Morocco and Libya through shared historical narratives.
Dr. David Garbi, the president of the Libyan Jewish Federation, is leading the delegation, underscoring the importance of this visit in the context of increasing interest in safeguarding the shared historical memory of the Maghreb region's peoples. The delegation's itinerary includes visits to key historical sites and institutions that highlight the presence of Jewish heritage in Morocco, illustrating the initiatives aimed at preserving, restoring, and documenting this rich cultural legacy for future generations. According to the foundation's statement, this visit holds special significance given the attention paid by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to preserving the religious and cultural heritage of Morocco, as reflected in the country's 2011 constitution which acknowledges the Hebrew component as an integral part of Moroccan identity.
The visit will take the delegation through six Moroccan cities, including Casablanca, Essaouira, Marrakech, Rabat, Fez, and Tangier, allowing them to experience the diverse historical, religious, and cultural sites associated with Moroccan Jewish heritage. Notable stops will include the House of Memory in Essaouira, historical synagogues, Jewish cemeteries, and museums, which serve as vivid representations of the cultural memory that showcases the interaction between Muslims and Jews and their contributions to Morocco's social, cultural, and economic life. The proposed program also encompasses meetings with civil and cultural actors, along with a media session intended to present the initiative's goals and its humanitarian and civilizational dimensions, highlighting the potential for collaboration in preserving Maghreb Jewish heritage.
Furthermore, the Adam Foundation for Human Brotherhood has pointed out that the objectives of this visit extend beyond merely exploring historical landmarks. The delegation aims to investigate the possibilities of benefiting from Morocco’s experience in documenting Libyan Jewish memory and preserving associated historical testimonies, documents, and cultural heritage. This initiative aspires to foster communication and exchange of expertise between stakeholders interested in heritage from both countries, encouraging historical research, scientific documentation, and the potential launch of joint cultural initiatives to protect Jewish memory across North Africa.
