Agadir University Hospital Staff Demand Better Working Conditions

Healthcare Workers at Agadir University Hospital Protest for Improved Conditions

In a significant demonstration of solidarity and concern, healthcare professionals, administrative staff, and technical workers at the Agadir University Hospital (CHU d’Agadir) recently organized a sit-in to voice their urgent demands for better working conditions. The protest, which attracted attention from various sectors of society, was fueled by pressing issues including a shortage of personnel, inadequate compensation packages, and persistent technical malfunctions that hinder the effective delivery of healthcare services.

Yassine Kazim, a representative from the Independent Union of Nurses and Health Technicians at CHU d’Agadir, articulated the frustrations of the staff during an interview with local media. He emphasized that the primary goal of this mobilization is to prompt the director of the Souss-Massa Territorial Health Group to take immediate action. Kazim lamented the ongoing difficulties faced by staff, noting that previous communications and appeals from personnel representatives have not received the necessary attention, leading to rising discontent among workers.

The protesting staff members are specifically calling for the resolution of issues related to on-call duties and compensation, which they believe are unfairly distributed. They also highlighted the lack of payment for performance bonuses and pointed to a critical shortage of human resources, despite the availability of modern medical equipment. Kazim underscored the troubling statistic that over 5,145 graduates from higher institutes of nursing and health technologies are currently awaiting recruitment opportunities. He urged for the organization of a regional mobility movement to address staffing shortages effectively.

Additionally, Sofiane Aouam, who represents the Independent Union of Administrative and Technical Staff at the hospital, supported the claims of the protesting workers, describing their demands as both reasonable and achievable. Aouam stressed the importance of performance bonuses, which he considers a fundamental right for the staff. He further raised concerns about the frequent breakdowns of the hospital's computer systems, which place additional stress on technical teams as they navigate their roles amidst these challenges.

The joint efforts of these union leaders culminate in a call to action directed at the director of the Souss-Massa Territorial Health Group to address these issues promptly. They are advocating for the protection of the rights and entitlements of the healthcare personnel, emphasizing the need for a supportive and efficient work environment that ultimately benefits both staff and patients alike.
