49th Dakar Rally Rescheduled to Morocco
In a significant development for motorsport enthusiasts, the 49th edition of the Dakar Rally, which was initially scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, has been rescheduled to occur primarily in Morocco starting from January 9, 2024. This decision comes in response to serious security concerns that led to the cancellation of the event in its original location. The prologue and the first stage of the rally will take place in the picturesque Algarve region of Portugal, while the remaining eleven stages will traverse the diverse terrains of Morocco, culminating in a grand finish at the vibrant city of Marrakech on January 23, 2024.
The total distance for this year’s rally is set at an impressive 7,824 kilometers, with 4,341 kilometers designated for special stages that will challenge competitors from around the globe. Since 2020, the Dakar Rally has been hosted in Saudi Arabia; however, the recent escalation of conflicts involving the Iran-supported Houthi militia from Yemen has raised significant safety issues. This comes after a period of relative calm since 2022, which saw a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict. The recent tensions, particularly heightened by the Iranian conflict, have led to the cancellation of major motorsport events in Saudi Arabia this January, prompting organizers to seek alternative venues where the event can proceed safely.
As the organizers finalize the logistics for this prestigious rally, the excitement builds among participants and fans alike, eager to witness the thrilling competition against the backdrop of Morocco's stunning landscapes.
