Morocco Enhances Water Security Through Desalination and Reservoir Expansion

Morocco's Comprehensive Strategy for Water Security

In a proactive response to the increasing challenges posed by climate change, Morocco is intensifying its efforts to secure a reliable water supply for its citizens. Water Minister Nizar Baraka recently informed parliament that the nation is making significant strides in both seawater desalination and enhancing dam storage levels. The current dam reserves have surpassed 11 billion cubic meters, achieving a fill rate of nearly 66 percent, which is more than double the levels recorded last year. This substantial stockpile is projected to meet the drinking water requirements for the entire country for an additional two years, underscoring the effectiveness of Morocco's water management strategies.

Morocco is home to 154 large dams with a combined capacity of 20.8 billion cubic meters, alongside various smaller reservoirs and transfer systems designed to optimize water distribution. The government's commitment to non-conventional water resources is evident, as existing desalination plants already produce an impressive 410 million cubic meters of potable water annually. Moreover, authorities have ambitious plans to construct 15 new desalination stations by the year 2029, aiming to elevate the total output to 2.3 billion cubic meters per year by 2030 to 2033. This future capacity will be strategically allocated, with 1.3 billion cubic meters designated for drinking water, 700 million for agricultural use, and 300 million for industrial processes.

These developments reflect Morocco's dedication not only to addressing immediate water supply concerns but also to ensuring long-term sustainability in the face of environmental challenges. By investing in innovative water management solutions, Morocco is setting a benchmark in the region for effective resource utilization and planning.
