Le Brasilia Camping Faces Loss After Devastating Fire
The famous Le Brasilia camping site located in Canet-en-Roussillon, Pyrénées-Orientales, has reported the destruction of one of its iconic buildings due to a tragic fire that occurred in July. This unfortunate event led to extensive damage, affecting around 40% of the site frequented by thousands of holidaymakers each summer. On November 6, 2026, management confirmed the loss of the beloved 'Marrakech' sanitary block, previously a standout feature of the campground.
This distinctive structure, known for its ochre facade and inspired by the architecture of Moroccan riads, did not withstand the flames that swept through the camping grounds. Expressing the sentiments of many, the management stated on their Facebook page, "It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to this cherished building." Despite the emotional toll, the camp's leadership is looking forward to the future, announcing, "Exciting developments are in the works to replace it, promising new surprises for our guests to discover!"
Looking Ahead: A New Era for Le Brasilia
In an interview with Actu Perpignan, Roger Pla, president of Le Brasilia and son of the campsite's founders, communicated the vision for the replacement of the destroyed sanitary block, emphasizing, "We cannot recreate history. Therefore, we will not be rebuilding it exactly as it was." However, he confirmed that the new sanitary block will retain the name 'Marrakech.' "My architect has designed a new type of facility that I believe will be quite impressive! We will keep the name, but it will be a completely different structure," Pla added.
Reflecting on the loss, Pla reminisced about the significance of the 'Marrakech' block, which had been a staple since its construction in 1996 and was favored by many guests. Unfortunately, its location in the path of the tramontane wind contributed to its destruction during the fire, which also claimed 150 bungalows, the beloved Cabane Asterix built in 1968, and the reception area. The administrative building, housing the history of the campsite, was also reduced to ashes. "We lost everything," Pla lamented, yet he remains determined to rebuild and promises a striking architectural design for the new office spaces.
Pla is committed to restoring the campsite's capacity to pre-disaster levels, and significant reconstruction efforts began three weeks ago. The reopening of Le Brasilia, initially planned for April, has now been rescheduled to May 3, 2027.
In recent years, Le Brasilia has distinguished itself from competitors with its unique sanitary facilities, each designed with a special atmosphere, including the acclaimed 'Marrakech.' This year, the campsite was awarded a gold medal for 'Best Sanitary Facilities in France' by Auto Camper Service International (ACSI), a well-known Dutch organization that recognizes outstanding campsites across Europe. "It’s always gratifying to receive such recognition on a European level," Pla expressed to Actu Perpignan.
