Marrakech to Host a Symposium on Aesthetic Transformations in Moroccan Visual Arts
The vibrant city of Marrakech is preparing to welcome an intellectual and critical symposium that aims to shed light on the journey of visual arts in Morocco, focusing particularly on its aesthetic and intellectual transformations. This event is part of the Marrakech phase of the national exhibition celebrating "60 Years of Visual Arts in Morocco," which is organized under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
The Moroccan Professional Artists Union, in collaboration with the Marrakech Digital University Library, is organizing this cultural gathering on Thursday, November 5, 2026, starting at 6 PM at the university library's venue in the city. This symposium is part of initiatives that seek to revisit six decades of Moroccan artistic experience, highlighting significant transformations on aesthetic and intellectual levels, while discussing their relationship with the evolution of society and culture. It will also address issues related to modernity and contemporary art, as well as the changing nature of artistic work and the ways to produce meaning.
The program includes three intellectual presentations. The first will be delivered by Mohamed Chouika, titled "Cinema Influence in Moroccan Art," while Abdel Samad Kabbass will discuss "From Painting to Contemporary Art: Has the Concept of Art Changed?" The third presentation, titled "Art and Meaning Sharing," will be provided by Moulay Hassan Al-Wafa. The symposium will be moderated by the visual artist Hussein Ilan, with opening remarks from Mohamed Mustafa Al-Areesa, Director of the Marrakech Digital University Library, and Sidi Mohamed Al-Mansouri Al-Idrisi, President of the Moroccan Professional Artists Union.
The organizers aim to foster a profound critical discussion regarding the Moroccan artistic experience, observing the development of its techniques and artistic visions, alongside evaluating its accumulated achievements and reflecting on the challenges and prospects facing it amidst the transformations in the contemporary artistic scene. This initiative aligns with the efforts of the Moroccan Professional Artists Union to enhance intellectual and critical dialogue surrounding visual arts, expanding its presence within cultural and academic spaces, thereby contributing to the recognition of Moroccan artistic experiences and highlighting their extensions and transformations.
